These marches are an integral part of patriotic American culture. Sousa, the son of a musician in the U.S. Marine band grew up with military music. He eventually became the conductor of the U.S. Marine Band in the late 1880s. After the Marines, he went on to form his own touring band playing mostly his own music. This band was very popular and toured extensively into the 1930s.
