Movement 2 (Largo), Symphony No. 9, in E Minor From the New World (Op. 95) by Anton Dvorak (1841-1904). This second movement is the most famous melody from the New World Symphony. It is often performed on its own as a showpiece at Pops concerts or in compilations of orchestral hits. The lyrical melody is beautiful and evokes the rural, pastoral quality of nineteenth-century America. It is said that Dvorak based the melody on African-American spirituals.
