The German composer Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827) was the predominant musical figure of his times. His music grew in both complexity and emotional depth as his career progressed. He is seen as a transitional figure helping to usher in the dawning Romantic era of music. He is regarded as one of the greatest composers of all time. His vast output lives to this day seeing thousands of performances around the globe each year..
Beethoven became deaf in later life and never fully heard his final works. His nine symphones are probably his greatest achievement, each one an unrivalved masterpiece, but he also wrote numerous concertos, piano sonatas, string quartets and one opera, Fidelio.
Beethoven was highly influenced by the ideals of the Enlightenment. He initially dedicated his third symphony, the Eroica (Italian for 'heroic'), to Napoleon in the belief that the general would sustain the democratic and republican ideals of the French Revolution, but in 1804 famously crossed out the dedication as Napoleon's imperial conquests continued throughout Europe.
