The Ruins Of Athens: Turkish March - Beethoven

Turkish March (Marcia All Turca) a movement from Beethoven's The Ruins of Athens (Die Ruinen von Athen), Opus 11. Composed in 1811 as background music to accompany a play, the Turkish march is filled with pomp and fanfare as if the military were on parade. The mood is light and jovial. The Turkish element of this piece is the use of cymbals and other percussion instruments associated with the Turkish military bands (Janissary bands) which toured Europe at the time and were very popular with the various courts.

Composed in 1809-10, the Egmont Overture, Op.84 is one of Beethoven's more briliant overtures. It was originally accompaniment music for a play by Goethe based on the life of Count Egmont. The heroic treatment of Egmont by Goethe is echoed by Beethoven's music which is powerful and expressive.

Movement 3 from Symphony No. 5 in B flat major, (D485) by Franz Schubert (1797-1828). Symphony 5 was composed in 1816. This 3rd movement, the minuet and trio movement, is sometimes compared to lt;a href=http://www.uniquetracks.com/cd/RS17.htmlgt;Mozart's 40th Symphonylt;/agt; because it seems to borrow almost identically from a chord progression used in Mozart's great symphony. The music here is highly melodic and lyrical. There is a uplifting sense to the main melody. The trio section of the movement is more subdued and quiet.

Movement 2 from the Unfinished Symphony, Symphony No. 8 in B minor by Franz Shubert (1797-1828). It's given the title unfinished because Shubert only completed two movements of the symphony and then put them aside to start another project. This second movement is the more lyrical of the two movements creating a tranquil and pastoral quality.
