Beethoven's music straddles the Classical Era (1730 ñ 1820) and the Romantic Era (1815 ñ 1910) of western concert music. In fact, Beethoven's music did much to usher in the new Romanticism which based itself on the Enlightenment sensibilities blooming in Europe at the time. His symphonies are constantly performed by orchestras around the world.

Beethoven's Second Symphony was written during a period (1802) when Beethoven, realising he was becoming deaf, started withdrawning from society. Nevertheless, despite his inner turmoil, Beethoven created a joyful and vigorous work with this Second Symphony.
The Fourth Symphony (1806) was actually composed at the same time as Beethoven's Fifth Symphony. It is the most neglected of Beethoven's symphonies because it comes between the much heralded Eroica, 3rd symphony and the famous Fifth Symphony. Nonetheless, it was viewed by Beethoven's contemporaries as a work of formal perfection. The composer Robert Schumann even remarked regarding the Fourth Symphony that "one has to squint to envision the "slender Greek maiden between two Norse gods".
