Beethoven's music straddles the Classical Era (1730 ñ 1820) and the Romantic Era (1815 ñ 1910) of western concert music. In fact, Beethoven's music did much to usher in the new Romanticism which based itself on the Enlightenment sensibilities blooming in Europe at the time. His symphonies are constantly performed by orchestras around the world.

The First Symphony, though stylistically indebted to his teachers (Haydn) is nevertheless all Beethoven. The wide ranging dynamics, the rhythmic fervor and the prominent use of woodwinds in the orchestration all become hallmarks of Beethoven's orchestral style.
The Eroica (Heroic) Symphony was originally named for Napoleon Bonaparte who Beethoven initially saw as a leader who would uphold the ideals of the French Revolution. When Napoleon instead named himself Emperor of France, Beethoven, enraged, crossed out the title and renamed the symphony "Sinfonia Eroica - composed to celebrate the memory of a great man".
