Ludwig van Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 in D minor, Op. 125 has become synonymous with mankind's highest aspirations. The fourth movement of the 9th symphony (the "Ode to Joy" choral movement) has been used in many festive and celebratory ways. It is now the official anthem of the European Union. In 1989, the complete 9th Symphony was performed in Berlin by Leonard Bernstein to celebrate the dismantling of the Berlin Wall. It also makes an appearance at Olympic Games and United Nations events. It is one of the most performed works of classical music in the whole repertoire.
