Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, the arch romantic, was also one of the great melodists of the 19th Century. His melodies are lyrical and passionate and create an emotional expressiveness and dramatic intensity evidence of which is on display in this recording of his Fifth Symphony.

Composed between May and August of 1888, Symphony No. 5 in E minor (Op. 64) was premeired, with Tchaikovsky conducting, in St Petersburg in November, 1888.
In modern times, the Fifth Symphony is famous for its performance by the Leningrad Radio Symphony Orchestra during the Siege of Leningrad in 1941. This performance was broadcast live in its entirety to London complete with the sound of bombs going off outside the concert hall.
On a visit to the United States in 1891, Tchaikovsky conducted the symphony with the New York Philharmonic at the opening ceremonies of a newly constructed concert hall named Carnegie Hall. The symphony remains a very popular performance piece being played in concerthalls throughout the world.
