Ottorino Respighi's Roman Trilogy is comprised of 3 separate works written at various times during the composer's life. In that all three compositions - The Pines of Rome, The Fountains of Rome and Roman Festivals - depict scenes and folk traditions of Italy and its capital city Rome, the works were, over time, brought together to form The Roman Trilogy.

Respighi's music, included here in the final volume of our 19th Century Masterworks series, points the way forward toward the 20th Century. In fact, all of the music on this 2 CD set was composed during the 1920s and 1930s. Respighi's style and sensibility seems to fit the Romantic Era though and we have therefore included him as our final composer representing the great music of that Romantic Age (compare Respighi's music to modernists composing at the same time like Gustav Holst to hear more of what would be the more dissonant 20th century).
Two other works featured in this collection, though not considered a part of the Roman Triology, are equally as bright and engaging. The Ancient Airs And Dances Suite No. 3 uses classical dance forms to create a beautiful and sensuous orchestral experience and the orchestral suite entitled The Birds makes use of bird calls creatively orchestrated throughout the orchestra.
Respighi is known for very innovative and exciting orchestrations. He studied with master orchestrator and teacher Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov in Russia at the turn of the century while on tour as a violist in Russia.
