Pavane in F-sharp minor, op. 50 composed by Gabriel Fauré in 1887. A slow and meditative piece, the Pavane is very effective as soundtrack. It has been used by the BBC as a title sequence for coverage of the World Cup (soccer) successfully playing the thrilling footage against the subdued and spiritual nature of the music. The Pavane is still very much in demand as a concert piece and is performed throughout concert halls of the world. (6:08)

Barcarolle from Tales of Hoffman - Offenbach
Barcarolle (1881) is the most famous piece from Offenbach's opera "Tales of Hoffman". It was used in the soundtrack of Roberto Benigni 's movie Life is Beautiful when Benigni's character, Guido secretly plays the Barcarolle over the concentration camp's loudspeaker in an effort to communicate hope to his wife and others. Can Can from Orpheus in the Underworld by J. Offenbach
Can Can (The Galop) from Orpheus in the Underworld by Jacques Offenbach. Very famous dancehall music of the late 19th century. The Can Can brings to mind Paris and the Moulin Rouge. Can Can actually translates to mean "scandal" which shows that the original dance raised some eyebrows when it was first performed. (2:11)

Flight of the Bumblebee - Rimsky Korsakov
Flight of the Bumblebee - orchestral interlude from the opera The Tale of Tsar Saltan by Nikolai Rimsky Korsakov (1844-1908). Composed in 1899, Flight of the Bumblebee is a hugely popular concert piece for symphony orchestra. It is most famous, in the US, as the basis for the theme music to the 1960s TV show The Green Hornet. This theme has been used everywhere from commercials to the Simpsons to the Little Einsteins TV show on the Disney channel. (1:37)

The Young Prince and Princess from Scheherazade
3rd movement from the symphonic suite Scheherazade titled "The young prince and princess". Composed by Nikolai Rimsky Korsakov (1844-1908). Rimsky-Korsakov was known as a masterful orchestrator and Scheherazade is known for its masterful and colorful symphonic writing. (9:51)

The complete overture from Rossini's opera William Tell. The stirring finale, brought on by the trumpets, is the most famous part of the overture. The River - an excerpt from the Moldau by B Smetana
Excerpt from the symphonic poem "The Moldau" (Vltava) by Bedrich Smetana (1824-1884). This work is an attempt to portray in music the Moldau River which flows through the Czech Republic. Czech's know the river by the name Vltava - the Moldau is a German translation. Our recording is a 6 minute excerpt which features the famous main theme or "river" theme. (6:08)

Excerpt from The 1812 Overture (Main Theme) by Tchaikovsky
The 1812 Overture (Main Theme) by Tchaikovsky commemorates the defeat of Napolean's army in Russia in 1812. The longer title for the work is Festival Overture "The Year 1812" in E flat major, Op. 49. The work is performed every July 4th in America to celebrate Independence Day and is often augmented with the use of real cannon blasts. Our recording features the most famous and concluding part of the piece. (3:34)
