The Piano Concerto No. 2 in B-flat major, Op. 83 featues many full and grand orchestral textures but it is also notable for the way in which Brahms pairs the orchestra down into small ensembles within the orchestra. Sometimes the piano plays with a very small section of the orchestra; just the cello section, or just the woodwinds. In fact this concerto can evoke the intimacy of chamber music.
|
An example of this chamber quality can be heard in the Andante third movement. This is beautiful writing for piano and orchestra. The fact that the Piano Concerto No. 2 has four movements instead of the standard 3 movements also marks this concerto as something special. Some critics have referred to it as a symphony for piano and orchestra (rather than a piano concerto). Brahms himeself gave the first performance, playing the piano part at the premier in 1881. The concerto was an immediate success.
Brahms' Violin Concerto in D Major, the second work on this album, is considered one of the most important and most technically demanding works in the violin repertoire. Initially, violinists during Brahms' time called the concerto unplayable. With the passage of time, the work has gained in popularity and is viewed today as a major work for violin. Every virtuoso violinist must come up against the Brahms Violin Concerto and master its technical challenges.
As background music, these two concertos will provide dramatic peaks and valleys that can underscore important moments in your production. The slow movements, in particular, are lush and beautiful and can really bring an elegant and refined ambiance to your work.
Symphonic Brahms - Volume 3 is a specially-priced 2-CD set with over 94 minutes of music.
