The Symphony No. 4 in E minor Op. 98 was Brahms last symphony. Completed in 1885. the premier was conducted by Brahms himself. This is Brahms at his most romantic and emotional.
Again showing his debt to Baroque forms, Brahms composed the 4th movement of this symphony in the form of a Passacaglia. Passacaglia's were popular in Bach's time, where a musical theme repeats again and again in the lower voices while new ideas are spun around it.

Written in 1880, the Academic Festival Overture was composed by Brahms in thanks for an honorary doctorate given to him by the University of Breslau. Brahms, somewhat tongue in cheek, included some boisterous student drinking songs within the Overture.
The Tragic Overture was also composed in 1880 and the two overtures are meant as a pair. The upbeat Academic Festival Overture balances with the tormented character of the Tragic Overture.
