Franz Josef Haydn's career spanned both the time of Mozart and that of Beethoven. He was great friends with Mozart and he taught the young Beethoven composition. Beethoven dedicated his first symphony to Haydn.
Haydn was the lead musician in the court of Prince Paul Esterhazy. His duties at court included composition, conducting and directing operas. The Esterhazy orchestra gave him an opportunity to experiment with symphonic writing. The demands of the court led Haydn to produce a steady stream of music in many genres, including string quartets, operas, choral works and symphonies. Haydn, a prolific composer, has left behind great musical masterworks which reward the listener with deep musical experiences.
This volume also includes several Beethoven overtures including the overture to his opera Fidelio. The overtures are heroic, powerful musical statements. The final piece, Concerto N4 by Paganini finishes the collection off with a technical brilliance so typical of Paganini, the master violinist of his time.

3rd Mvt, Symphony 5 D 485 - Franz Shubert
Movement 3 from Symphony No. 5 in B flat major, (D485) by Franz Schubert (1797-1828). Symphony 5 was composed in 1816. This 3rd movement, the minuet and trio movement, is sometimes compared to Mozart's 40th Symphony because it seems to borrow almost identically from a chord progression used in Mozart's great symphony. The music here is highly melodic and lyrical. There is a uplifting sense to the main melody. The trio section of the movement is more subdued and quiet. (6:18)

Mvt 2, Symphony 8 (Unfinished Symphony) - Franz Shubert
Movement 2 from the "Unfinished Symphony", Symphony No. 8 in B minor by Franz Shubert (1797-1828). It's given the title "unfinished" because Shubert only completed two movements of the symphony and then put them aside to start another project. This second movement is the more lyrical of the two movements creating a tranquil and pastoral quality. (11:46)

Violin Concerto 4 - Paganini
Concerto For Violin And Orchestra No. 4 In D Minor: Movement 1, Allegro maestoso by NiccolÚ Paganini (1782-1840). Filled with intensely emotional violin flourishes, this concerto movement is a prime example of Paginini's virtuosic brilliance. As a soundtrack or underscore, this music will lend itself well to moments of high drama and passion. (13:22)
