Composed between 1824 and 1827, the music on this two disk set was written at a time when Shubert, realizing his health was failing, was seeking to come to grips with his own impending death. Though somber in some of the slow movements, the overwhelming emotion felt throughout these works is of joy, love, a sense of triumphancy.
These are all large works and it is with this music that Schubert left the influences of Mozart and Beethoven behind. With Death and the Maiden and the Piano Trios 1 and 2, Schubert has truly put his mark on his own mature style, at the same time pointing the way to the coming Romanticism that would encompass Europe for the rest of the century.

Movement 1, Allegro, String Quartet No. 14, (D 810) by Franz Schubert (1797-1828). This highly dramatic string quartet has been used as underscore in the films Portrait of a Lady and most famously in Roman Polanski's 1994 film entitled Death and the Maiden. (12:01)

Mvt 2, Death and the Maiden Quartet - Franz Schubert
Movement 2, Andante, String Quartet No. 14, (D 810) by Franz Schubert (1797-1828). The title Death and the Maiden by which this quartet is known, actually comes from this 2nd movement because it uses the theme from a Shubert song that also is titled "Death and the Maiden" (Der Tod und Das M”dchen). This movement creates several variations from the song melody. As underscore it will work well with melancholy or sad moments. (14:51)
