Beethoven's music straddles the Classical Era (1730 - 1820) and the Romantic Era (1815 - 1910) of western concert music. In fact, Beethoven's music did much to usher in the new Romanticism which based itself on the Enlightenment sensibilities blooming in Europe at the time. His symphonies are constantly performed by orchestras around the world.

The Seven Symphony (1812) is cited as Beethoven's turning point, where classical elements give way to romantic ones creating a new, boldly personal expression. The second movement from this symphony is probably Beethoven's most famous slow symphonic movement and is well worth a listen.
The Eighth Symphony (1812) was composed around the same time as the Seventh Symphony. It is known as the "Little Symphony" because it is the shortest of the Beethoven symphonies. Considered a true masterpiece despite its overall simplicity, it is light-hearted and joyful throughout

Allegretto, Mvt 2 from Symphony No. 7 in A major (Op. 92) by Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827). This is probably Beethoven's most famous slow movement from his symphonies. Dominated by a brooding melody, the movement gradually builds to a huge climax. When this work was premiered, this movement had to be repeated as an encore. It is often played as a solemn remembrance at state funerals or important historic events in Europe. (7:56)
