Beethoven's music straddles the Classical Era (1730 ñ 1820) and the Romantic Era (1815 ñ 1910) of western concert music. In fact, Beethoven's music did much to usher in the new Romanticism which based itself on the Enlightenment sensibilities blooming in Europe at the time. His symphonies are constantly performed by orchestras around the world.

If one could only pick a single symphony for a time capsule that would give evidence of what an orchestral symphony was, that example would most likely be Beethoven's Fifth Symphony. It's famous opening 4 note motif is perhaps the most well known phrase in all of western classical music.

This symphony is constantly rewarding, no matter how many times one hears it. Each movement has its own personality yet the entire symphony can be formally linked to the opening 4 note phrase.
The Sixth Symphony also known as the Pastoral Symphony (1808) is an expression of Beethoven's love of nature. In fact Beethoven seemed to find peace being in nature - a peace that seemed to escape him in the daily affairs of his personal life. Each movement of the symphony is an attempt to portray a scene from nature. Beethoven named each as: Mvt1. Awaking the emotions full of life upon arriving in the village Mvt2. Scene at the creek Mvt3. Joyful reunion of peasants Mvt4. The Tempest Mvt5. Feelings of joy and gratitude after the Storm
