Perhaps second only to Vivaldi's Four Seasons, the first movement of Beethoven's Fifth Symphony is one of the most famous and most recognized pieces of music in the world. The opening C Minor motif in the lower strings is immediately gripping and ominous.

The strings play notes that emulate flowing water. Towards the end of the movement the woodwinds emulate bird calls including nightingale (flute), quail (oboe), and cuckoo (clarinet).
